Johann Georg (John George) and Elizabeth Louise Utz Schwab

John George and Elizabeth Louise Utz Schwab were the parents of William Henry Schwab, this photo was taken by an unknown photographer sometime in the late 1870s. John George and Elizabeth are buried at the Caroline Lutheran Cemetery in Caroline, Ohio.

In May, 1885, 21 year old William Schwab married Louise Catherine Brown who was a daughter of Lewis and Catherine Brown who resided in Chatfield Twp., Crawford Co., Ohio. Louise was one of 10 children.

She and William were to be the parents of 5 children, the last of which died in infancy. Louise Catherine Schwab died in July of 1893 shortly after giving birth to this child. We have no pictures of her.

This could be a very significant photo. It was taken by Low & Myers of Attica, Ohio. A. B. (Almadoris Boutwell) Low was born in Butler Twp., Richland Co., Ohio 1n August 1845. He was a child of Alfred & Mary Phipps Low. In 1850, Alfred who was born in Boston, Massachusetts was working as a mason and Mary, born in London, England was keeping house.

By the time of the 1880 census A. B. Low was married (c. 1871) to Adelade Couch and they were the parents of a baby
girl (later to be named Vera). A. B. Low was a photographer in Attica, Ohio (Venice Twp.). When he started his photgraphy business in Attica is not known at this time, but his early CDV format pictures were labeled "A. B. Low" and since there was not a "Myers" who was a photographer in the Attica area in the 1880 census, it can be speculated that the "Low & Myers" partnership was formed sometime after 1880. This would agree with the photo evidence above. William Schwab was born in 1864 and was older than 16 at the time the above picture was taken. How old he may have been is only a guess, but probably older than 25, so the photo must have been taken after 1889.

The 1900 census reveals that A. B. Low was still a photographer in Attica, Ohio. The census lists no other photographers in the village of Attica. There is no "Myers" with the occupation of photographer living in the area in 1900 and therefore the "Low & Myers" partnership must have dissolved prior to 1900. In 1900 William and Tressie (William's 3rd wife) are living on a farm in Richmond Twp,, Huron Co., Ohio. Richmond Twp. is east of and directly adjoining Venice Township, Seneca County.

The 1910 census finds the Low family living in Cleveland, Ohio and A. B. Low is listed as "retired". William and Tressie are living in Bloom Twp., Seneca Co. which is directly west of Venice Twp. Sometime during that 10 year period, William acquired the tools to become a photographer in the Attica area. The tools and studio of A. B. Low were sold during that same period of time and so there is a strong possibly that William may have purchased the Low photography business. More research is needed in this area...

A. B. Low and his wife Adelade, died in Cleveland, Ohio in 1934 and 1942 and are buried in the Attica cemetery.

William and second wife Charlotte "Lottie" Myrice Schwab c. 1895

Charlotte was one of 10 children of James and Margaret Hawkins Myrice. She was probably born in Belmore, Putnam Co., Ohio. Her father was a Civil War veteran who enlisted at the age of 23 and served in Co. G, 99th Ohio Infantry Regiment. He died in 1890 when Lottie was 15 years old. She married William in 1895 at the age of 20. They had one child, William Edward Schwab.

Do you suppose the picture was taken just east of Caroline, Ohio where the R R crosses Honey Creek?

George Washington, Mabel Marie, & William Carl Schwab c. 1907

William and Tressie Schwab were to have a long and happy marriage, They raised the two surviving children from his first marriage as well as having three children of their own.

George Washington Schwab was the key to identifying his father as the William Schwab with the photography studio in Shelby in 1906. He was born in Shelby in February 1906 and died in Attica in May 1907. His birth and death information allowed the connection to be made with his parents William and Tressie Schwab.

Tressie, William Carl, William Henry, Mabel Marie, and Emma Sawyer - c. 1908

This might be a significant picture clue to the identity Emma Sawyer who appears in several of William's photos. . Sometimes her pictures are labeled Emma Sawyer and others, Emma Sawyer Schwab. Based on 1900 census information, Emma was living near Attica, Ohio with Elizabeth Kemp who was a 75 year old widow. Her occupation is listed as "servant" however that was a term broadly used and in this case, Emma was probably a care provider for Mrs. Kemp. In the 1900 census, Emma listed her parents as being born in Missouri. There were no Sawyer families living in the Attica, Ohio area in 1900 or 1910 of an age to be Emma's parents. It could be speculated that Emma was an orphan and came to live in the Attica area and helped with Mrs. Kemp. She became acquainted with the Schwab family and was adopted by them. Further research is needed on this subject. Additional photos of Emma appear below on this page.
