Researching the Adolphe Alexander Chaillet Family - Part II

"I don't know when or where my grandfather died. My dad said the last time he saw him was
in New York and he was taking some electric equipment to Russia."
Alexander Bickmore Chaillet II

What is the answer to Alexander Chaillet's question?

What happened to his grandfather after he departed in 1916 taking electrical equipment to Russia??

Professor Chaillet was always a bit of an enigma to those who have studied his influence on The Shelby Electric Company, his design of the long-lived Shelby lamps and his family. The last records concerning the professor found to date reveal that he had been on board the ship "Empress of Asia" in July of 1916, probably on a business trip. He departed Yokohama, Japan en route to Victoria, British Columbia.
The ship's manifest information includes:
Adolphe A. Chaillet, age 48, widowed
Have you been to Canada before - Yes
When - 1890, How long - 2 mo.
Country of birth - France, Race - French
Destination - New York, New York
Tourist
Protestant

What did become of Professor Chaillet?

Gilles Braschi's information on the previous page indicates he died July 26, 1940 in Tonkin, Vietnam. That area was under French protectorate until 1945 and therefore could have French records for businesses located in that area. But nearly 25 years passed from the time Prof. Chaillet left for the trip to Russia and his death "on the twenty-seventh of July, nineteen hundred and forty, died at his residence, in the village of Trap Khê (Mine Spring), Hugen from Yen Hung, district of Quang-Yen (Tonkin) Adolphe Alexandre CHAILLET, mine director."

Mine director? - a lot must have happened in that time !
Please check back for possible further developments!
